Thinking about joining the WRHS School of Music? Here are some frequently asked questions.
Question: I don’t even know how to march! How can I be in band if I can’t march!
Answer: The Wiregrass Ranch band staff has years of experience teaching new members how to march. Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it looks.
Question: I heard that the band practices everyday after school, all year long, is this true?
Answer: NO, The Marching Bulls ONLY practice after school twice a week during football season (ends at the beginning of November). The rest of the year is occupied by concert band. The concert bands rehearse during class and, rarely, after school.
Question: I heard that it’s very expensive to be in band, my parents can’t afford band, what should I do?
Answer: Band is actually cheaper than many other activities on campus and all of the fees collected go right back into making a more memorable and educational experience for all members. That being said, we at the WRHS band understand that times can be tough. We have NEVER turned away a student that is unable to pay right away. The director and boosters will work with students that have financial trouble to create a reasonable payment plan or fundraising options. If you are willing to work, so are we.
Question: Can I play other sports or activities while in band?
Answer: YES, band doesn’t take a lot of time after school so most coaches are willing to work with us when it comes to practices. Remember, The Marching Bulls only perform and practice regularly during football seasons. Most winter and spring sports will not conflict.
Question: What are the dates of the summer band rehearsals?
Answer: Generally, summer band camps are the two weeks prior to the first day of school.
Question: I’m not a freshman, can I still join band?
Answer: YES, if you have an interest in being in band, you can join. If you have prior experience on an instrument, GREAT! If not, please contact us for more information about starting something new!
Question: I want to be in band, do I have to take the class?
Answer: YES, all members of the WRHS band will need to be enrolled in the class. Those students taking orchestra or chorus, may be exempt depending on their section (typically, colorguard).
Question: I want to be in the color guard, do I have to take the band class?
Answer: Color guard members should take the “Eurhythmics” class offered during the school day.
Question: Does the band compete?
Answer: Typically The Marching Bulls will participate in 3 - 4 competitions each fall (including the Music Performance Assessment). These competitions will take place during late September - early November.
Question: Is there an up-to-date calendar available?
Answer: YES, the calendar is available on this website.
