Preview day two 4/22

Just a review of what we discussed on Thursday, April 22 on the second day of the AP Theory preview...

SCALES!

The piano keyboard (the standard instrument that we’re using) is set up in “half-steps” AKA “semi-tones”. This means that each key is a half step from the one next to it (don’t forget about the black keys). For the purposes of this class, each half-step will have a value of “1”. For example, “A” to “A#” is “1”... “C” to “D” is “2”....

There is no black key in between B & C and E & F.

The whole step/half step relationships for the MAJOR scale is:

2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1

Natural minor:

2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2

Harmonic minor

2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 1

Melodic minor (ascending)

2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1

Melodic minor (descending)

same as natural minor

See you next week!
