Music Theory Preview 4/15

In review of the things we talked about today (Thursday, April 15),

The books that you will need to buy are:

The Practice of Harmony by Peter Spencer
The Study of Counterpoint by Johann Joseph Fux

We discussed the way that pitch is notated in Western Music (the music that we are used to in this country). Also discussed was the temporal nature of music (time)... It's one of the few art forms that can only exist in time.

When reading/writing music, remember that horizontal movement is related to the forward progression of time.... Vertical movement is related to pitch.

There were several pages that you should do before the next time we meet (next Thursday). Please see me if you were absent so you can pick those up.
